Some Promises Require a Process
Jun 8, 2010
We get all excited about the promises of God—and we should. We want forgiveness, abundant life, healing and prosperity. God is good and as his children He has promised us good things. We hear those promises and we say, “Yes, Lord! I want that! I want what you have for my life. I am willing to do your will.”
Some promises require a process for God to get you from here to there. And while we were so excited about the promise, our struggle on the journey to the promise exposes the process required to get there. Do you find that your commitment, at this point, begins to waiver? We begin to ask God and ourselves questions: Did I really hear from God? God, are you sure? Is there any easier way?
Our humanness cries out for another way. We want to check the GPS and see if there's an easier way to arrive at the promise. It's not that we're rejecting God's will, but we're rejecting the way we have to go for His will to be realized in our lives. God, I want to do your will, but does it have to be this way?
Even Jesus questioned the process when he stopped in the Garden of Gethsemane. He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, "O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will."[1]
A process precedes the promise and that's where we struggle most. When we hear what it's going to take to get there, it makes the journey difficult to embrace. When you reach the place of surrender—then the promise is assured. We can say in confidence and trust—not my will, Father, but yours.
